LIMASSOL, CYPRUS – 09 April 2026 – Acheon Akti Navigation announces that its CEO, Charalambos Manoli, recently served as a key panellist at the inaugural CSN Singapore Shipping Debate. Held at the Marina Bay Sands during the APM 2026 exhibition, the high-profile event gathered maritime leaders to discuss the industry’s trajectory amidst current global volatility.
Initially scheduled to explore the theme of “Fuels of the Future vs The Reality of Today”, the debate’s focus shifted to address the unprecedented geopolitical crisis in the Middle East. With the Red Sea compromised and the Strait of Hormuz effectively closed, the panel tackled the immediate reality of whether the global fleet can physically and financially navigate the geopolitical ‘permacrisis’ of 2026.
During the session, Mr Manoli provided a stark assessment of the financial pressures dictating current fleet strategies. He highlighted the growing trend of ‘CAPEX paralysis’ across the sector, pointing to the noticeable drop in alternative fuel newbuildings as direct evidence of this market hesitation.
“Shipowners are currently caught between long-term environmental targets and the immediate necessity of operational survival,” Manoli observed, summarising his stance at the debate. “With key bunkering hubs blocked, and the immense capital requirements associated with dual-fuel technology, we are seeing a necessary retreat to conventional, proven technologies. Right now, guaranteeing operational certainty has to be the priority.”
Moderated by CSN Managing Director Adonis Violaris, the panel also included senior representatives from Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement, Intermaritime Shipmanagement, and ICS SOLIX. The group reached a broad consensus on several critical issues, including the end of lean, ‘just-in-time’ supply chains in favour of structural resilience, and the glaring disconnect between rigid environmental regulations, such as the CII and vessels forced into evasive routing.
Above all, the debate underscored the paramount importance of the human element. The panel agreed that while the industry pushes towards a highly digitalised ‘floating factory’ model, the immediate priority must remain the psychological and physical safety of seafarers navigating active conflict zones.
Acheon Akti Navigation remains committed to steering through these complex challenges, ensuring that the long-term drive towards decarbonisation is balanced pragmatically with the harsh realities of geopolitical survival and the safety of its crews.
